San Francisco Fall: September-November

Fall in San Francisco is truly the best time of year for weather. Days are warm and sunny, sometimes blisteringly so, and nights are mild and clear. Rainfall is rare, the fog has cleared and the long warming process has reached its magnificent zenith, making September, October and early November the three best months to visit San Francisco.

All CitiSuites locations have a required one month minimum stay EXCEPT the Gaylord Suites (www.gaylordsuites.com) which has a one week (7 night) minimum stay, perfect for September or October vacation.

Tell your family, friends, and co-workers.

A Walking Tour of San Francisco’s Past:
The Barbary Coast Trail

The Barbary Coast Trail takes you on a historical 3.8-mile walking tour through the busy streets of San Francisco. Inspired by Boston's popular Freedom Trail, the walking tour features historical highlights from the days of the Gold Rush and the Barbary Coast, to the 1906 earthquake and the Beat renaissance.

The tour begins at the Old U.S. Mint in the heart of downtown. From there it heads north, weaving its way through San Francisco’s most vibrant and historic neighborhoods to Aquatic Park.

On the trail, you will stroll past Gold Rush-era buildings on a street lined with hitching posts and Victorian street lamps, discover a Chinatown lane lined with colorful balconies, and learn of tong-war battles and the Gold Rush’s bordello fetes.

For a more structured education, the trail also includes five museums. The Wells Fargo History Museum features gold nuggets and antique stage coaches. The Maritime Museum exhibits displays on sailing ships and side-wheel steamers. And the Chinese Historical Society Museum of America details the contributions of Asians in the Old West.

Connecting 20 historic sites, including the birthplace of the Gold Rush, the oldest Asian temple in North America, a Silver King mansion, the western terminus of the Pony Express, and the largest collection of historic ships in the United States, the trail features an attraction for every interest.

According to the official Barbary Coast Trail website, there are three ways to walk The Trail:

  1. Audio Tours — Download a digital audio tour onto your MP3 player or iPod from www.barbarycoasttrail.org

  2. Printed Guides — Two printed guides are available at San Francisco bookstores or by mail order.

  3. Guided Tours — Guided tours with trail creator Daniel Bacon are available by appointment only. His lively descriptions and amusing anecdotes are a treat for all those who love The City by the Bay.

The Sausalito Art Festival

If you’re a lover of the arts and going to be in the Bay Area this Labor Day weekend, make sure to take a trip to Sausalito’s annual Art Festival. Featuring stars of the contemporary art scene and more than 20,000 works of art, the yearly arts fair is a special place to enjoy your Labor Day Weekend.

At the fair you will find paintings, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, fiber art, fine glass, woodwork, mixed media, and photography. From functional to surreal, witty to the elegantly decorative, these one-of-a-kind and limited edition Art Works form an unparalleled collection that can only be seen once a year. Meet the artists one-on-one, then take in the afternoon sun on the lawn in the scenic bayside park.

Enjoy non-stop entertainment on three stages. Bands of all musical genres create a festive soundtrack for the event. Musical performers include Crunchy Frog (rock), Al Steward (singer/songwriter), Commander Cody (country), The Neville Brothers (funk), Pride & Joy (Motown) and many others. For a full entertainment schedule, visit sausalitoartfestival.org/entertainment.html

To get to the Festival, festival organizers recommend visitors use ferryboats, public transportation, and the Free Festival Shuttle Service. The Free Festival Shuttle Service is provided from 9:30am to 7:00pm, serving parking lots, the downtown Sausalito Ferry Landing, and the Festival Main Gate. If you’re coming from San Francisco, you can purchase a Combined Ferry-Festival Ticket Package that includes sailings directly to and from the Festival Pier.

Tickets for the event alone cost $20 for adults, $10 for seniors (62+), and $5 for kids 6 and over. Children ages 6 and under are free. Visit sausalitoartfestival.org for more information.
