The SF/SPCA (The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), is partnering with Macy's to give homeless cats and dogs a second chance to find loving homes. Noted as one of USA Today's "10 Great Places to Press Your Nose Against the Glass," Macy's pet-friendly windows inspired the adoption of 200 animals and over $25,000 in donations for The SF/SPCA last year. Since
the first Holiday Windows was held 21 years in downtown San Francisco ago the event has raised over $227,000. Jan McHugh-Smith,
after thanking Macy's for its commitment to Holiday Windows, announced that the goal of the 2007 event is to find forever homes for 240 companion animals!
All CitiSuites team members are participating in this holiday program at Macy's Union Square. Team members have been working various shifts at night and on the weekends to help find these nice animals a new home!

If you're looking for something a little "greener" to give this holiday season, here are some suggestions from Environmental Defense.
- Buy carbon offsets in the recipient's name. Along with cutting your own carbon emissions - and fuel bills - help your friends and family offset theirs. (more...)

- Give a national parks pass or a membership to botanical gardens or aquariums. (For an extra-special gift, surprise with a cross-country train tour or an eco-vacation.)

- Choose Organic Chocolate which is cultivated on small plots under a shade canopy that preserves critical elements of the native tropical forests. (more...)

- For food lovers, try one of these sustainable food cookbooks:

- One Fish, Two
Fish, Crawfish, Bluefish: The Smithsonian Sustainable Seafood Cookbook by Carole C. Baldwin and Julie H. Mounts (illustrated by Charlotte Knox) provides recipes, information and illustrations for eco-friendly seafood. $24.85 at bookstores.
For more information, visit the book's web site.

- Chez Panisse Café Cookbook ($23.04 hardcover) and the Chez Panisse Menu Cookbook ($14.56 paperback) by Alice Waters, the doyenne of cooking with locally grown, seasonal ingredients and a strong advocate of sustainable agriculture. Available at bookstores.

- Cooking with Nora by Nora Pouillon, a pioneer in organic cuisine and owner of two Washington restaurants; $28 at bookstores.
Born in San Francisco on August 2, 1873, when Smith Hallidie successfully tested his new mode of transportation, the cable car became an instant hit for tackling the City's steep hills. Originally operated by several different companies, it wasn't until
1957 when the Municipal Railway of San Francisco (MUNI) consolidated the routes into what is today's Cable Car system.
True to their name, cable cars are pulled by a cable that runs beneath the street. The cable is made up of four loops of wire and travels at a constant rate of 9-1/2 miles per hour. The individual cars attach to the cable using what's called the "cable
car grip". The grip is nothing more than a 327 lb. pair of pliers that extends through the slot between the rails and grabs the cable. The harder the grab, the faster the car will go.
In the spirit of the historic cable cars, each year Muni holds the annual Cable Car Bell Ringing competition in Union Square.
The competition is between current and former cable car workers and was
won by First-time champion Leonard Oats, a 7 year a gripman with Muni.
