The Sea Lions at Pier 39 are one of the highlights of a trip to this popular San Francisco tourist destination. You probably know about the sea lions, but do you know why they decided to make the pier their home?
Historically, the California sea lions have always lived at Seal Rock, north of Ocean Beach, right below the Cliff House Restaurant. They come to the Bay to feed and sleep in the calmer waters.
But in September 1989, sea lions started to appear at Pier 39's K dock. The dock had been refurbished and while no boats were docked there, the sea lions figured out it was a good spot to call home. Even then, at the end of the '89 summer, only 6 to 10 sea lions were hanging out at the dock.
Over the coming year, the sea lions decided the pier was a nicer location to live than Seal Rock. By the beginning of 1990, about 150 sea lions were counted at the pier.
It remains a mystery why the sea lions decided to leave Seal Rock, though some speculate that the 1989 earthquake had something to do with it. Others think a large part of the migration has to do with how the pier provides the sea lions a safe haven from sharks and orcas unlike the Rock.
The invasion led to a profitable tourist attraction, but it didn't make everyone happy. Locals complained about the noise and boaters were unhappy that they had to avoid sea lions in order to reach their boats.
Each year the sea lions head south in June and July to breeding grounds 370 miles south on the Channel Islands, but a few have remained throughout the summer in recent years. They usually come back to invade the pier again in late July or August, so there's plenty of time to visit and enjoy the noisy, wild creatures that moved into the pier almost 20 years ago.
33 Tall Ships
An experience of a lifetime...
For five days, San Francisco Bay will sparkle with majestic Tall Ships surrounded by an array of exciting activities, both on land and on the water.
In addition to the
Parade of Sails on the Bay,
Justin Herman Plaza and the Ferry Building will transform into the International Village and showcase the sounds and flavors of the many cultures that make San Francisco home.
And what better way to showcase the city's diverse history than with "Ye Olde Velocity Circus Pirate Academy."
From July 23 to 27, 2008, local entertainment ensemble Velocity Circus is presenting "Ye Olde Velocity Circus Pirate Academy." Kids of any age will enjoy the intricacies of a highly theatrical and interactive environment, while honing the skills and ways of those mischievous water rogues,
otherwise known as PIRATES. Velocity Circus team of slightly unprincipled, playfully deceitful scoundrels and rascallettes will teach children how to walk, talk and present oneself in only the most proper pirate ways.
Some of the exciting components of the Festival of Sail Pirate Academy include:
- Join fellow pirates at "Mermaid's Cove" to receive a tattoo reminiscent of the sea
- Learn the lingo from an old pro of the sea
- Enjoy the tales of the swashbucklers told by an engaging pirate
- Partake in the interactive station where pirate students learn about the Tall ships and their travels
- Learn the world of knot tying
- Perfect pirate sword skills with a master sword pirate
- Use ropes and pulleys to learn the ins and outs of rope handling
- Discover basic pirate training, including clothing, lingo, drills, calls, etc
