In San Francisco, it's February showers that mean March flowers. Spring is here, and the beautiful weather is inspiring us to get out and explore the city.
Golden Gate Park offers a wide variety of outdoor enjoyment for the warmer spring days. Stretching more than 45 city blocks, the park can be found in the city's Sunset district,
and is most easily accessed off 19th Ave.
The sprawling park offers gardens, lakes, a Japanese Tea Garden, a golf course, a playground, a world-renowned art museum, hiking trials and, of course, the historical and horticultural gem, the Conservatory of Flowers.
Take a Spring Stroll
In March,
the spectacular cherry trees begin to display, with the single flowered varieties blooming in the picnic meadows first, followed by the bright doubles in April. Sit under a flowering tree in a meadow and let the petals fall over you.
Japanese Tea Garden's cherry trees generally put on their show between March 15 and April 15.
Tulips are also expected to be in fine glory from March 15 through April 15 (Queen Wilhelmina Tulip Garden is a popular destination).
And of course, spring flowering shrubs are blooming in the park throughout the spring season. One favorite is the fragrant blue or white Ceanothus (California lilac), a California native.
Visit the Conservatory of Flowers
With almost two thousand plant species represented in its exhibits and floral displays, the Conservatory is part of a distinctive circle of modern American horticultural museums. Did you know its wood and glass greenhouse is the oldest existing conservatory in the Western Hemisphere?
First opened in 1879, the Conservatory of Flowers has been severely damaged over its history, and for some years it seemed like it might be a lost cause.
In 1995, the Conservatory had to close due to severe windstorm damage, when a pacific storm with winds over 100 mph damaged the Victorian greenhouse. After the storm, spontaneous donations from private citizens kick started what would become a $25 million rehabilitation effort.
Reopened in 2003, the Conservatory has transformed into a cutting-edge horticultural museum with displays in five galleries including a wide variety of tropical, aquatic and potted plants, as well as special exhibits.
Admission is $5.00 for adults, $3 for Youth 12-17, students and seniors, $1.50 for children aged 5-11 and free for children under 4. The Conservatory is free to all visitors on the first Tuesday of every month!
Get Lost
Although Golden Gate Park has beautiful destination gardens, the park was designed for folks to "get lost." There are interesting features, surprising plants, magnificent tree groves and sunny glades around the next bend on any trail. And did you know that there are ten lakes in Golden Gate Park?
