Finally, have you ever wondered why fog forms in San Francisco or thinking about going to the Black and White Ball?
This month's feature demystify the San Francisco fog and give the inside skinny you need to know about the Ball.
Did you know that one of the world's most extravagant black-tie parties is held in San Francisco each year? Since 1956, the Black & White Ball has been the premier event of the San Francisco Symphony season.
The event, to be held on May 31 at the War Memorial Arts Complex, benefits San Francisco Symphony's Adventures in Music program, a free music education program serving every single child in the San Francisco Unified School District, grades 1-5.
This year Grammy award-winning recording artist Seal will headline the Ball. Dozens of other musical acts, ranging from salsa to Motown, will perform in six venues. In addition to the music, the food will be plentiful. An abundance of gourmet creations, complimentary wine, champagne, and cocktails will be available to enjoy throughout the evening.
There are a variety of ticket options for the Ball, including a $200 Party Pass (not including the Seal concert), and a $325 pass, which includes the concert and allows patrons to start off the Ball with Seal on stage in Davies Symphony Hall. Additional VIP options are available, including the opportunity to meet Seal in an intimate reception following the concert.
If you're wondering what to wear-the requested attire is literally black tie, that is, black and white tie. Guests are asked to wear black and white formal wear, although being as the event is in San Francisco, guests are may take subtle liberties. As the Symphony puts it, "black tie or black and white evening attire is mostly worn, but there are many variations on this theme."
To order tickets by phone, call 415-964-6000 or visit www.sfsymphony.org/ball.

With a cooling affect as much as 40 degrees Fahrenheit, the San Francisco fog is a weather phenomenon that, for lack of a better description, keeps the sweatshirt salesmen at Pier 39 in business!
But why exactly does the fog form?
Unlike common valley fog, the fog in the San Francisco (and much of the Northern California Coast) is called advection fog and is caused by cooling of moist air over the water. Because the continental slope lies right off the coast, "upwelling," rising of deep, cold water to the surface occurs. This cold water cools the moist air being pushed by the Prevailing Westerlies, causing it to cool, expand and condense into the thick fog we see on most hot summer days.
And did you know... besides making for grey days, the fog is credited with saving the western part of the city from fire after the 1906 earthquake and aiding Patty Hearst and other SLA members escape during a bank robbery in the Sunset District.
