It's a bird... it's a plane... it's a whole bunch of planes. That's likely what you'll be thinking when Fleet Week returns to San Francisco this October.
Celebrating the men and women in our armed forces, the annual festival takes to the skies and the SF streets on Oct 9 to 14. The highlight of the celebration is, of course, the spectacular air shows that roar through the city.
Heard from SOMA to The Marina, famous planes and pilots, including the Blue Angels, Air Force's A-10 Demonstration Team, and Team Oracle, will be on hand for fancy air maneuvering. The very first San Francisco Fleet Week was held in 1981, and since has served as a tribute to the men and women serving the United States Navy, Coast Guard, and Marine Corps.
The United States Navy Blue Angels, the finest military air performance team on the planet, offer quite the show. It's hard to miss if you're in the city during one of the performances or rehearsals, but premium seats require advanced tickets. Box seats are $25 and VIP seats (on the Marina Green, right on the water's edge) are $150 for adults, $75 for children aged 4-12.
Insider's Tip: If you watch to catch a glimpse of the talented pilots without the crowds without a ticket, you can enjoy the Angels' rehearse on Thursday, Oct 9, and from 1pm to 3pm on Friday, Oct 10.
After which, at 3 PM sharp Fat Albert Airlines, the Blue Angels' nickname for their Lockheed-Martin C-130T Hercules, will fly in over the City and introduce the 2008 Blue Angels Show . After a pause, from the four compass points come the United States Navy Blue Angels screaming in over San Francisco Bay in fighter aircraft. If you miss the show on Friday, you can catch additional showings on Saturday and Sunday at 3pm.
This year, the USAF F-16 and P-51 Mustang will fly side-by-side to commemorate the history and evolution of air power through the ages. The Blue Angels will make their 27th appearance. On Friday, October 5th, the new Airbus A380 will fly over San Francisco Bay as a “salute to the importance of San Francisco as a travel gate.
Another popular aspect of Fleet Week is the parade of naval ships, which stick around in town long enough to explore. This is your chance to board active-duty U. S. Navy warships as well as U. S. Coast Guard cutters. The ship tours open at 10 AM and conclude at 4 PM.

Even though its odd fire-hydrant shape led to some controversy back when it was built atop Telegraph Hill in 1933, today Coit Tower stands as one of San Francisco's most-visited attractions.
From the 210-foot art-deco tower, one can take in incredible, 360-degree views of the Bay and of the city.
Coit Tower was built atop Telegraph Hill in 1933 at the bequest of Lillie Hitchcock Coit, an honorary member of Knickerbocker Number Five Fire Company and a lifelong firefighting buff. The tower was built in 1933 using a $125,000 bequest from Coit for the purpose of “adding to the beauty of the City which I have always loved.
The tower was designed by architects Arthur Brown, Jr. and Henry Howard with murals by 26 different artists and numerous assistants. These frescoed murals by 26 different artists ringing the central section of the structure depict “Aspects of Life in California, 1934” were funded by the Public Works of Art Project, 1933-34.
The 75th anniversary of Coit Tower will be celebrated on October 18, 2008 at the 75th Anniversary Diamond Jubilee Celebration. The day will include a children's art contest, a rally of antique fire trucks, a temporary exhibit featuring memorabilia, photo displays on the construction of the tower in the 1930s, free elevator rides to the top of the 210-foot-structure all day, special anniversary souvenirs, docent tours and family activities.
