You may walk past San Francisco's buildings everyday without much thought, but this month you have a chance to explore their details in a bit more depth.
The fifth annual Architecture & The City Festival, sponsored by the American Institute of
Architects, is taking over San Francisco for a month-long celebration of shape and form.
Last year's festival attracted more than 20,000 attendees. This year's theme, Design for the Community, has spurred San Francisco's dashing mayor Gavin Newsom to officially proclaim September Architecture and the City month.
San Francisco is also currently experiencing a design renaissance of sorts, with the recent opening of Daniel Libeskind's Contemporary Jewish Museum and Renzo Piano's California Academy of Sciences building slated to open next month, just in time for the festival.
Amongst the highlights for the 2008 program are the Home Tours weekend from September 13-14, the Architectural Gems bike tour on September 20, and the Golden Gate Bridge Tour on September 28.
Other events in the series range from lectures on sustainable design to a lunch with the editors of Dwell Magazine at their headquarters.

In 1975, the late comedian Jose Simon had a dream to put on a free outdoor "concert" of comedy.
It took a few years and a lot of cooperation from a lot of people to make it happen, but since 1981 more than 500 of the world's funniest comedians have performed free-of-charge for over a half-million people at Comedy Day in San Francisco.
You're "free" to laugh at this outdoor day of jokes and punch lines. This year, the event will take place on September 28 in Golden Gate Park's Sharon Meadow.
San Francisco's professional comedy community joins together each year to produce the five-hour show. The Punch Line, Cobb's Comedy Club, SF Sketchfest, Pepperbelly's, and founder Simon would each produce an hour-long set.
Simon, sadly, passed away earlier this year, but his dream for free outdoor comedy lives on. The annual event now draws upward of 50,000 people to the park for a good laugh.
For a full list of performing comedians and more information on the event, check out www.comedyday.com
